Ep. 078 - Thoughts on the Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma"
Monday Sep 14, 2020
Monday Sep 14, 2020
In this episode, Bob & Kevin discuss the newly released, Netflix, documentary "The Social Dilemma" (https://www.netflix.com/title/81254224). If you have not watched it, we strongly encourage you to do so. Topics covered range from AI to social engineering and the impact that social media has on our world today and its threat to freedom as we know it.
Shortly after the show was recorded, this article was posted to Medium and we think it adds some great flavor to the discussion: https://medium.com/@jeff_seibert/the-mechanics-and-psychology-behind-the-social-dilemma-719d618aa8ce

In this episode...
Bob & Kevin discuss the https://hey.com/ email platform and their struggles with Apple (app store) to get and keep their app available to anyone that is interested. This brought the conversation around to "ecosystems" in general and the pros and cons of their existence.

Okay, solve maybe a bit of a stretch, but in the era of social distancing and Covid-19 we think the word needs to take a hard look at what grocery shopping currently looks like and adopt some more digital and touchless solutions.
The other softball topic (yeah right) we try to tackle involves the establishment of some sort of universal digital identification - you can probably guess where Bob rests on this issue, but you may be surprised on where Kevin ends up on the issue! Hey, if y'all can figure out where he stands on this, feel free to reach out and let us know, please ;)

Bob & Kevin discuss the recent flood of "list your security question answers here" types of social engineering social media posts that have been all over our social feeds in the recent "COVID lockdown era" and a few more topics related to social engineering, personal data leakage and more.
Amazingly, we actually feel like we DID solve some things in this episode, you will just have to listen to see what it is that we solved. In all seriousness, some good practical content in this episode (well at least we think so).

Bob & Kevin continue their crusade against sketchy tech practices and in this episode discuss how the U.S. Government is taking issue with Tik Tok because it is an app developed out of China and it might be stealing our data... but apparently Facebook, Google and the like are just fine, because the government can actually request any of their data - or so Edward Snowden says!
We talk about some other tech stuff too. Hey, as always, reach out to us at https://twitter.com/bobandkevinshow and let us know what you like, what you don't like, or what you want to hear us discuss more of.
Thanks for listening!

Well, since everyone on the planet appears to be talking about Edward Snowden, we thought it was time that we weighed in. Bob & Kevin both recently listened to Mr. Snowden as a rare, remote guest on the Joe Rogan Experience (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efs3QRr8LWw) so we had to talk about the episode and a bunch around mass surveillance, our darn cell phones and how facebook just ruins everything for all of us!
We also discussed how the US government is basically in a "no lose" situation with Snowden and that Ed is basically in a "no win".
Of course, we discussed the area in the Snowden interview where he brought up aliens... and we had thoughts!
Feel free to message us on twitter (https://twitter.com/bobandkevinshow) and let us know what you thought of this episode!

In our latest episode, Bob & Kevin (self-proclaimed tech pundits) discuss the new release cycles for our major operating systems, the ettiquette (or lack there of) on stack overflow and how there is a definite developer drought in rural America. Listen for Bob's struggles with the word rural several times and try to coin the phrase "tech desert"
Kevin is desperately seeking a tech meetup in the middle of nowhere - can anyone help him out?
Bob & Kevin took some time to decunstruct the most recent #demDebate as it related to "big social" and the implications of social media in our current election cycle.
Somehow, we looped it all back to darn alien technology and propulsion that has yet to be figured out. F*cking aliens!!!

Well, we really wanted to have three topics for this episode, but wow, did we have too much fun discussing this new, and frightening crypto development around Facebook! We kicked off the episode discussing all the new smart home security tech that Kevin is putting into his new house and we fully intended to talk about podcast tech and other pods that we like and or dislike and why... but we totally got carried away discussing Libra. Take a look at one of the articles we were referencing https://techcrunch.com/2019/06/18/facebook-libra/ while listening and let us know how you think this will all play out! We also gave some quick hits on the block chain while discussing this new crypto currency - https://www.ibm.com/case-studies/large-financial-services-company

Show Notes Galore for this Episode! We started things off sharing our thoughts about a Sam Harris podcast episode where special guest Roger McNamee discussed his book "Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe" You can catch that episode in full here: https://samharris.org/podcasts/152-trouble-facebook/
We also discussed what facebook might look like in the next five years. That conversation was sparked by this article: https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-15-months-of-fresh-hell/
We also had some discussion around youTube and Twitter regarding content and responsibilities sparked by a tweet from one of our favs - Tim Pool https://twitter.com/Timcast/status/1118140799676506112 - of course this got us talking AI and the Achilles Paradox - https://www.britannica.com/topic/Achilles-paradox
We wrapped the episode with a little PSA about our friends Microsoft and their apparent security risk of a browser - IE11... read more here: http://flip.it/9WMBiv

The latest episode of the Bob & Kevin Show can best be summed up by the following quote:
"I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and whats true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), the lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance."
- Carl Sagan 1995, The Demon-Haunted World

This week, your dynamic duo of Bob & Kevin discussed Mr. Z's 4 simple rules - or the biggest corporate cop out we have seen in quite some time. Anyway, we digress. In addition to discussing the op ed that appeared in the Washington Post, we discussed the recent events surround Article 13, or is it now Article 17? Anyway, we talk master copyright databases mixed in with a little bit of Star Trek governmental wisdom and we finally end up talking about Google's ethics committee for AI that apparently can't even sit at the same table with each other. As usual, you can find us on twitter as the @bobandkevinshow and we are instagram as @bobnkevinshow (not sure why they limit those characters... grrr) - drop us a line! Join your favorite technology consumer advocates Bob & Kevin as they discuss Facebook giving us a real-time, Black Mirror prequel. Bob & Kevin also take a deep look at the "new monopoly" in tech, which is basically coming up with the most ubiquitous platform imaginable... hardware, software, original content... you know, what Apple is trying to become with the release of their fill in the blank plus original content platform. Oh, wow, guess what, this is also straight out of a potential Black Mirror prequel... have you seen 'Nosedive'? or watched our YouTube episode - https://youtu.be/wX-_GNGZXG8 ?

Well, in this week's episode, Bob & Kevin kick things off discussing a recent Joe Rogan Experience podcast episode with Jack Dorsey, Vijaya Gadde & Tim Pool because, well, it was an amazing cast on an amazing show. The funny thing is, when we listen to shows like that, we get a TON of validation of our topics for discussion. At about the midway point... we actually broke into the INTENDED topic for the show - encryption backdoors... and the ethics of such things!
The conversation was kicked off by a published paper that Kevin found online and our on-going debate about tech and ethical choices. The paper can be found here: https://digitalcommons.spu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=1062&context=honorsprojects and the discussion is in the audio file attached with this episode... so what are you waiting for? Hit the play button already!

Saturday Jan 12, 2019
Saturday Jan 12, 2019
Oh, boy... naming this episode was so TOUGH! We had quite a few discussions that contained some very interesting analogies and comparisons... so name options were abundant! Long time followers of the program will know that this is typically the time of year where we cover the CES show, and we did not stray from that topic this week. We discussed how some of the new tech is not all that new (big shock) about 4k and now 8k video (ugh) and how the XPS laptop camera is finally where all the other webcams of the world are positioned on laptops. Oh, and you know we rip on facebook, google, amazon and the other tech giants. We also discuss this new piece of exercise gear - https://www.mirror.co/

Ep. 022 - Bob & Kevin catch up and cover all the random topics
Wednesday Oct 31, 2018
Wednesday Oct 31, 2018
We jump back into it this week after both of us have been crazy at work, traveling all over, and just dealing with everything that life has been throwing at the two of us the past couple of weeks. Don't worry, we still talk about twitter and facebook... we even discuss the new facebook video calling thingy??? What the heck is that all about anyway. Not gonna lie, we are both a little out of practice and we even forgot to really start AND end the episode... so, we hope you enjoy this completely raw and barely edited, very special episode. As always, feel free to hit us up on twitter (https://twitter.com/bobandkevinshow) and let us know what you think of the episode. Have a great week!

Ep. 021 - Remote work habits - good, bad and ugly
Wednesday Oct 17, 2018
Wednesday Oct 17, 2018
This episode could be title true confessions of a remote worker... but we thought that was a bit too click bait-ish... who are we kidding... We just thought of it as we were uploading the episode and the artwork was already done! Anyway, in this episode, our two courageous hosts give us a glimpse into the real life struggles of remote work in the 21st century. Frightening tales of killer chairs, bare feet, shower schedules and so much more. We really enjoyed this episode, because it is just another shining example of how two close friends can be completely different human beings.

Ep. 019 - How much privacy do our browsers really give us, and are there alternatives?
Wednesday Sep 05, 2018
Wednesday Sep 05, 2018
Yup, we talked about browsers tonight... something along the lines of browser wars version 3.0. Apparently firefox is coming out with a new version that blocks all tracking out of the box... then we find out that a browser called Brave also already does this out of the box! Kevin talked about a chrome plugin that lets you pick which scripts to block and Bob worried about what all this new browser stuff will do to his robust event tracking in google analytics. We also talked a bit about the social media hearings on the Hill today and what this all means for the future of truth in our worlds... tune in and let us know what you think!

We did eventually get to our main topic of product reviews and how trustworthy we think they are with our special guest, Andrew Barta, but it did take us a while! We had tons of fun talking about many other topics including tech industry job interview controversies, social media audience building techniques and more. Oh, and we also had a few audio issues along the way that made for some entertaining space filling conversations from Bob & Kevin. Be sure to check out Andrew's social media properties after listening!

Ep. 005 - So, do we really have to SSL all the things? It turns out that...
Friday May 25, 2018
Friday May 25, 2018
In this episode, Bob & Kevin discuss first, what SSL is and then why it is so necissary. Of course, Bob shares his frustrations with the entire thing and questions WHY we even need to have SSL in the first place. We discuss three (or more) options that web developers have when it comes to implementing SSL solutions and the pros and cons of each.
