Ep. 091 - Tech ecosystems and responsibility to end users and participants
Monday Apr 12, 2021
Monday Apr 12, 2021
This week we discuss ecosystems... not like where plants and animals live, but tech ecosystems like an app store, or Amazon or Facebook... or even operating systems like Microsoft with communication platforms, productivity tools and more.
The focus of the conversation is on the responsibilities of the ecosystem owners and how we see things currently working in ecosystems and how they might be changed moving forward.

This week, Bob & Kevin challenged each other to write episode teasers for two possible Black Mirror episodes - and we think you will like what we came up with!
We opened the show with some discussions about China and Russia and their new regulations related to software within the boundaries of each nation.
What would a mid-December episode be without a discussion about the best tech-related Christmas gifts of the season? Bob & Kevin discuss three tech gifts each, with a couple bonus gifts as well.
As always, hit us up on twitter - and give us some feedback about the episode - maybe there will be some free swag in it for you! Thursday Aug 01, 2019
Thursday Aug 01, 2019
In this episode, Bob & Kevin discuss a planned neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada being proposed by Alphabet (formerly Google) subsidiary, Sidewalk Labs. We discuss both the technological and non-tech innovations that are being proposed and discussed. It actually gets a little intense when Bob & Kevin discuss the application of the word 'utopia'. In addition to Quayside, we discuss new Twitter, a recent podcast from Land of the Giants (https://pca.st/V7d9) on the topic of the rise of Amazon Alexa and where the future may be. We wrap up the episode going over the list of all the companies that make up Alphabet - https://abc.xyz . Show Notes Galore for this Episode! We started things off sharing our thoughts about a Sam Harris podcast episode where special guest Roger McNamee discussed his book "Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe" You can catch that episode in full here: https://samharris.org/podcasts/152-trouble-facebook/
We also discussed what facebook might look like in the next five years. That conversation was sparked by this article: https://www.wired.com/story/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-15-months-of-fresh-hell/
We also had some discussion around youTube and Twitter regarding content and responsibilities sparked by a tweet from one of our favs - Tim Pool https://twitter.com/Timcast/status/1118140799676506112 - of course this got us talking AI and the Achilles Paradox - https://www.britannica.com/topic/Achilles-paradox
We wrapped the episode with a little PSA about our friends Microsoft and their apparent security risk of a browser - IE11... read more here: http://flip.it/9WMBiv

Join your favorite technology consumer advocates Bob & Kevin as they discuss Facebook giving us a real-time, Black Mirror prequel. Bob & Kevin also take a deep look at the "new monopoly" in tech, which is basically coming up with the most ubiquitous platform imaginable... hardware, software, original content... you know, what Apple is trying to become with the release of their fill in the blank plus original content platform. Oh, wow, guess what, this is also straight out of a potential Black Mirror prequel... have you seen 'Nosedive'? or watched our YouTube episode - https://youtu.be/wX-_GNGZXG8 ?

Well, in this week's episode, Bob & Kevin kick things off discussing a recent Joe Rogan Experience podcast episode with Jack Dorsey, Vijaya Gadde & Tim Pool because, well, it was an amazing cast on an amazing show. The funny thing is, when we listen to shows like that, we get a TON of validation of our topics for discussion. At about the midway point... we actually broke into the INTENDED topic for the show - encryption backdoors... and the ethics of such things!
The conversation was kicked off by a published paper that Kevin found online and our on-going debate about tech and ethical choices. The paper can be found here: https://digitalcommons.spu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=https://www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=1062&context=honorsprojects and the discussion is in the audio file attached with this episode... so what are you waiting for? Hit the play button already!

Ep. 029 - All In, Baby! Rapid fire role reversal and more - call for interns!
Thursday Feb 28, 2019
Thursday Feb 28, 2019
So, apparently Apple doesn't like episode numbers in titles any more... a topic for another episode for sure. In this non-numbered episode (sure we will play the game), Bob & Kevin switch roles and come up with some of the best audio quality to date (what took us so long?). Kevin drives the conversation with some difficult questions for angry Bob to deal with. Oh and we send out a call for interns - wanna work with two crazy old dudes that hate the idea of folding screen phones? Then you need to intern with the B&K Show! Hit us up on our tweeters, yo! https://twitter.com/bobandkevinshow

Ep. 026 - Suzanne Somers for 500 Please
Saturday Jan 12, 2019
Saturday Jan 12, 2019
Oh, boy... naming this episode was so TOUGH! We had quite a few discussions that contained some very interesting analogies and comparisons... so name options were abundant! Long time followers of the program will know that this is typically the time of year where we cover the CES show, and we did not stray from that topic this week. We discussed how some of the new tech is not all that new (big shock) about 4k and now 8k video (ugh) and how the XPS laptop camera is finally where all the other webcams of the world are positioned on laptops. Oh, and you know we rip on facebook, google, amazon and the other tech giants. We also discuss this new piece of exercise gear - https://www.mirror.co/

Ep. 024 - The gender dropdown discussion
Thursday Nov 15, 2018
Thursday Nov 15, 2018
I wish we could say we were sorry for the click bait, but one of the topics we covered tonight was the dropdown menu for gender. You will have to listen to the episode to hear how we covered it, but trust us... it is something worthy of discussion. We also discussed how our combined journalistic talents are on par with the rest of the world of tech news, in our humble opinions... LOL
As always, give it a listen and let us know what you think! Until next week...

We also discussed Amazon HQ 2.0 and signalR technology.

Ep. 019 - How much privacy do our browsers really give us, and are there alternatives?
Wednesday Sep 05, 2018
Wednesday Sep 05, 2018
Yup, we talked about browsers tonight... something along the lines of browser wars version 3.0. Apparently firefox is coming out with a new version that blocks all tracking out of the box... then we find out that a browser called Brave also already does this out of the box! Kevin talked about a chrome plugin that lets you pick which scripts to block and Bob worried about what all this new browser stuff will do to his robust event tracking in google analytics. We also talked a bit about the social media hearings on the Hill today and what this all means for the future of truth in our worlds... tune in and let us know what you think!

Thursday Aug 30, 2018
We had so much fun with this episode! We discussed everything from Dependency Injection, to the Surfacebook 2 and pretty much everything in between. If you are interested in learning Bob's & Kevin's thoughts on many current TV shows and more, this is the episode for you! We talk Westworld, House of Cards, Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley. As usual, please let us know what you want to hear more of, or less of... and be sure to rate us on Apple Podcasts if you can... Thanks!

This was by far our most controversial episode! Bob & Kevin discussed propaganda, brainwashing, cults and more as it relates to when something should be banned from various social outlets and the slippery slope that comes with deciding when someone no longer has the right to spread their message. We also talk about the blurred lines between entertainment and reality and if anyone is really EVER telling the full truth and sharing all the facts. Where the heck are we supposed to get our news these days? Heck is this chart even legit? https://www.facebook.com/vanessa.otero.9619/posts/10155006385626062 - who the hell knows!

We are just cranking out the content as fast as tech is spitting out the headlines! In this episode, we discuss the recent demo of Google Duplex and just how creepy robot calling could get. Then we try to identify any of the tech giants that we are okay with... it was hard to find any, but the banter is hilarious. We even talked some flying cars, the Turing Test and a bunch more.
